For many people, putting their beloved dog into kennels or even leaving them with family when they go on holiday can take the edge off the trip. Add to that the cost of kennelling, and suddenly taking Fido with you seems a good idea. But what about camping? Can a camping holiday work with a dog? What are the pros and cons?

First of all, check that your camping site allows dogs. Not all do. Most will insist on dogs being kept on leads, which is good news if you don’t want other dogs approaching yours but bad news if your dog is not going to take kindly to being restrained all day.

If your dog is a camping virgin, it may be an idea to try him out in a tent in the garden. Put up your tent in the usual manner, complete with all your camping accessories and camping equipment. After all, it is better to know that the idea is doomed at home rather than several hours’ drive away. If your dog is going to bark all night at every little rustle in the undergrowth you could find yourself being asked to leave.

Some nervous dogs will be highly suspicious of tents, especially if they flap about in the wind, so it can help to leave the tent up in the garden and get the dog used to it, using bribes if necessary!

Like cars, tents can be hot places in good weather, so never be tempted to leave the dog alone in one. This can obviously be a drawback if you want to go out for the day to a place where dogs are not welcome. Bear in mind that not all beaches allow dogs, especially in the peak season.

Wet weather too can prove tricky for dog owners in a tent. Unless you have a porch where they can be left safely you may find all your belongings covered in mud (or worse if they are prone to rolling in unpleasant substances)!

Last but not least, make sure you clear up after your dog.

When it comes to cat-proofing your house the day or two before bringing home a new kitten, there are several things that you simply must not forget to do, both for your new cat’s safety and your own sanity!

First thing’s first, remove all valuable items from view. Cats love exploring and won’t leave any corner of your home untouched in their bid to roam around each nook and cranny of your house. Vases are sure to be knocked over within five minutes of a kitten’s arrival, as are decorative bowls, photo frames, and other loose items left lying around. If you have a room in your house that you’re keeping a cat-free zone, put all of your valuable display items in there. If that doesn’t apply to you, simply lock them in a cupboard, at least until you can teach your kitten not to be so enthusiastic about leaping around everywhere.

Secondly, make sure your kitchen cupboards are securely fastened, particularly ones in which cleaning substances and other dangerous chemicals are kept. One lick of detergent, for example, could be enough to make your cat really ill, so consider investing in some sort of attachable lock for a couple of your cupboards.

Try to keep electrical cords out of sight and tack them to the skirting board of your rooms wherever possible. Cats love biting through cables, so don’t take a risk with this process.

Remember that some items which are perfectly safe to humans aren’t so friendly to kittens. Flowers are a great example of this, as are plants, some of which can be poisonous to cats and can potentially cause a fatal reaction.

Ultimately, using common sense should ensure that your home is suitable for introducing a new kitten, but remember that in the first few days, you should keep a very close eye on your new arrival, since he or she is bound to do something that ruins all your best laid plans!

Tea tree oil has been known to be a very powerful natural extract that combat bacterial and fungal ailments on the skin and respiratory problems. Topical use is the most common route of treatment for skin infections such as acne, boils and warts. Tea tree oil is also used to cure dog skin problems, canine dandruff and is effective in getting rid of lice. The benefits on the skin provided by tea tree oil makes it a good ingredient in protecting and optimizing skin health.

As we know, dog skin problems are very common since their skins are slightly basic, compared that of humans, dogs have sweat glands only on their noses and other exposed parts of their body not covered with fur. With humans, the presence of sweat glands and a more slightly acidic skin pH creates a thin film on the surface of our skins to cover us from factors in the environment that could harm us and affect our overall health. Dogs, have a more basic skin pH, which is covered with fur. Therefore, they don’t have enough acid to fight and protect themselves from bacteria and other pests from the environment. Realizing this then would make us take dog skin problems seriously or if possible, do early preventive measures to protect our dogs and lessen their susceptibility to agents and pests that may harm their skin. Dog skin problems include eczema, scalp psoriasis, ringworm, etc, as skin is the first line of defense of the body, the primary step is to cleanse our canine friends. It is not advisable to frequently bathe our dogs since its skin might get dry if the natural oils are often washed off the skin. So when bathing our dogs once in a while, we are to use products that ensure thorough cleansing and moisturizing.

First, the oh-so-reliable tea tree oil has a lot of benefits, but aside from its chemical properties, its physical property of smell is also very useful. We all know that it is used in aromatherapy, we all love the relaxing and minty scent it gives out but creatures such as ticks, fleas and lice are sensitive to. And if your dog has been invaded with these creatures, it is inevitable that it would often scratch its dog skin causing breaks making itself prone to infection. The good thing about tea tree oil is that it may discourage your dog from digging its skin due also to its aroma. Shampoos and creams are available in the market, however some claim that tea tree oil is harmful to pets such as cats and dogs because it may cause poisoning when swallowed. According to Paracelsus, “All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; only the dose permits something not to be poisonous.” On one hand, cats and small dogs can be sensitive to tea tree oil but on the other hand, the proper amount through dilution can be always achieved. To make sure that the amount of a pet product ingredient is not toxic, ask your Vet about it or look for products that have been certified safe for treatment of dog skin problems. Dog skin problems can be avoided through proper nutrition, simple cleansing and grooming. Use of other products that have ingredients unfamiliar to us to treat diseases like dog skin problems require us to educate ourselves to be more responsible owners to our canine friends.
